AOC Haut Médoc
As was defined in the decree of the INAO of November 14, 1936, its southern boundary borders the city of Bordeaux and the Médoc AOC north.
It covers 15 communes producing. Eight are on the bank of the Garonne and the Gironde: Blanquefort, Parempuyre, Ludon, Macau, Arcins, Lamarque, Cussac, and Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne. Seven inland communes are: Le Taillan, Le Pian-Médoc, Avensan, Saint-Laurent-Médoc, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac and Vertheuil.
Contains some of the most prestigious municipal denominations in the world (AOC Margaux, AOC Listrac-Médoc, AOC Moulis-en-Médoc, AOC Saint-Julien, Pauillac AOC and AOC Saint-Estèphe).
Production area
South of the Medoc peninsula with an area covering 4,596 hectares.
Municipalities on the bank of the Garonne and the Gironde: Blanquefort, Parempuyre, Ludon, Macau, Arcins, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne.

Soil
Gravels and clay limestone soils favorable for Cabernet.
Soil moisture retention, rich in clay and heavy, better suited for growing Merlot grapes.
Climate
Atlantic smooth, due to the proximity of the ocean.
Red Varieties
Major: Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Secondary: Also permitted Cabernet Franc and Carménère
Types wine
- Red wine. Wines with complex aromas, woody, with notes of blackberry and currant mint, licorice and spices. The palate are nervous, happy, generous and powerful. In general they are wines with excellent aging potential: 5-30 years. Must contain, before any enrichment or concentration, 178 grams of natural sugar per liter and present, after fermentation, a minimum alcoholic strength of 10% alcohol.
Planting Requirements
- Base Performance. A maximum of 48 hectoliters per hectare.
- Minimum plant density. High density planting: a minimum of 6,500 plants per hectare.
