One of the world's most famous wineries.
The vineyard extends to 113 hectares between the villages of Sauternes and Fargues, although only about 100 hectares are in production time.
Like all AOC wines of Sauternes, the wines are produced from grapes affected by noble rot, Botrytis cinerea.
To ensure quality, multiple selections are made during the year to ensure that only the grapes affected by this fungus are selected.
For most of the twentieth century, the Château was led by the Marquis Bernard de Lur-Saluces who developed his status until his death in 1968. Since 1996, Château d'Yquem is owned by French luxury giant LVMH, who bought 51% of the Château to the family of Count Alexandre de Lur-Saluces after a bitter family feud, although he remained a director of the farm.
The bitter legal battles continued after the sale and the May 17, 2004, Earl retired and was replaced by director of Château Cheval Blanc, Pierre Lurton. It is known that the count was dedicated in particular to maintain quality, coming to reject an entire batch of wine if you did not like the results of a randomized trial.

Château d’Yquem

Designation of Origin Sauternes Premier Cru Supérieur (Premier Cru Supérieur)

In the official classification of Bordeaux wine, 1855, Château d'Yquem was the only Sauternes which was given the Premier Cru Supérieur, indicating the perceived superiority and high price compared to other wines of its type . The wines from Château d'Yquem are characterized by their complexity, concentration and sweetness. A relatively high acidity to balance the sweetness. Another characteristic for which are known Château d'Yquem wines is their longevity. In a good year, a bottle will only begin to show its qualities after a decade or two of wine and with proper care, will keep for a century or more, gradually adding layers of flavor and therefore undetected fruit tones. On average there are only 65,000 bottles annually. In a bad harvest, all production can be considered unworthy of the name of the Château, this has happened 9 times in the twentieth century: 1910, 1915, 1930, 1951, 1952, 1964, 1972, 1974 and 1992 and now one in XXI century: 2012. Being an extremely long-lived wine, bottles of 100 years old and more can be found in excellent condition if properly maintained. The wine is made with grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, called noble rot. This causes the grapes are partially grapes, resulting in a higher concentration of sugar and wines with a distinctive aroma.
