Can Fontanals is placed in Avinyonet's beautiful place, lands that were forming a part of the property of Avinyó's Castle, constructed in the year 990. The surname Fontanals, name of the Farmhouse, lasted throughout the time until the year 1847 when Esperança Fontanals married with Adjutori Esteve. In spite of these I change surname, the house was continued naming " “Can Fontanals ".

It was in 1889 when Joan Esteve Marcè took a determinant decision for the future of our champaign. It decided to travel to France to the search of new vine-stocks, which were immune to the insect of the phylloxera and to be able to replant the whole estate. This fact caused great expectation and the vineyard where these new varieties stood firm they received the name of " The Inquisitive one ", since the whole world was going to see since they were adapting these new vine-stocks in our region.

The figure of this forefather deserves a special recollection, since he was one of the principal entrepreneurs in wanting to modernize the exploitation and to cultivate personally all the lands. It was sure that this innovative spirit also was present when in the year 1957, Joan Esteve Nadal bought one of the first tractors of the people that still we preserve. Into this machine it incorporated the mechanical traction in those tasks that in those moments were realized by animal traction, into the cavalries.From that moment, there has taken place the great qualitative and quantitative jump in Can Fontanals. The incorporation of new machinery, so much for the culture as for everything what concerns the production of wines and wine-cellars it has never been a constant, but without losing that spirit of wanting to support the respect and the loyalty to our history.
