Associació de Viticultors del Penedès

Founded in 1974

The Vine-growers' Association of the Penedès, which was founded in 1974 in Vilafranca del Penedès's Barcelonian locality, groups approximately 800 vine-growers of the region of the Penedès, possibly one of them bigger wine-growing entities of Spain.

Already in the times of his foundation, the vine-grower felt that the future was the quality and that it was necessary to join and to be organized to walk together in the same direction: to establish the quality as prestige and the valuation of the grape of the Penedès. Every year, the Association contracts about 1.500 worker proceeding from the whole Spain to realize the different tasks of the world of the vineyard.

Nevertheless, after almost thirty years of existence, it has come near to a very difficult situation. Since it predicted the current meeting, " the approval of the D.O. Catalonia, which was created exclusively in order that those companies which it does not concern for them do not even bear the prestige of the Penedès in mind, but the number of bottles that sell, has allowed to take to the zone grapes come of out of the region ".

From the approval of the mentioned D.O., the price of the grape has not stopped going down. The fall of the purchase on the part of the bottlers and the reduction of the prices makes unviable the subsistence of many vine-growers.

In the practice, the explained situation has reverberated directly in the fall of prices of the grape, as well as it will reverberate directly in the price to the fall of the wine of which these companies are nourished and that they are acquired in the main in the cooperatives of the zone. One of the big producers of Wine-cellar, it announced last August that the grape would pay to the producers to the same price that the previous years, but that would reduce the entry of vintage because it has stock of bottles.
